And has them hunting for the right answer. We spoke to consulting nutritionist and clinical dietician Pooja Makhija, fitness instructor Sucheta Pal Zes and dermatologist Dr Apratim Goel to find out more…

Myth 1
Not eating anything is the best way to lose excess weight
Fact:
If you starve yourself for a few days, you will lose weight quickly but along with the flab, you will also lose hair, your glowing skin and more. Plus, starving can only be temporary, and so, as soon as you begin to eat normally again, your body, which had become conditioned to not getting any food, will being storing every morsel you eat as fat, to save itself. You must eat to delete. Eating small meals every two-three hours will increase your metabolism and you will end up losing weight, because you are eating. A win-win situation all the way!

Myth 2
Slimming pills are great for quick and effective weight loss
Fact:
There are too many quick fix diet pills in the market. You can have slimming pills and lose weight temporarily. Most of these pills have side effects that you may not be aware of at all, but weight loss experts and fitness instructors say that if you looking for a long-term solution to losing weight, you need to eat on time, exercise every day and then, only if your doctor prescribes it, have the slimming pill.

Myth 3
If the label says ‘low fat’, then it is healthy and you can gorge on it
Fact:
There are many so-called ‘diet’, ‘healthy’ and ‘zero-fat’ versions of food on the shelves. Don’t get tempted to gorge on them just because the label says ‘health food’. Even that has to be had in moderation. Foods labelled low-fat sometimes have a lot of sugar in them. Choosing fresh, fibrous fruits and vegetables is always a healthy option.

Myth 4
You should not touch that fast food if you want to lose weight
Fact:
Craving a meaty burger or pizza? Do not punish yourself by staying away from it, because studies have shown that if you do that, you might end up gorging on bad calories later. Experts say that even if you are trying to lose weight, it is okay to have a small piece of cake, or a slice of pizza, once a week or so. You just need to keep in mind that you don’t overindulge.
