Jolt for Congress: 2 more MLAs resign in Gujarat

GANDHINAGAR: In another setback to the Congress ahead of next month’s Rajya Sabha polls, two party MLAs offered their resignations today.

This came a day after three Congress MLAs quit the party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Maan Singh Chouhan and Sana Bhai Choudhari are the two MLAs who resigned from the grand old party on Friday.

On Thursday, three Congress MLAs PI Patel, Balwantsinh Rajput and Tejashree Patel resigned from the party.

Rajput is a relative of Shankersinh Vaghela, who quit the Congress last week, while PI Patel was the Congress legislator from Vijapur.

Meanwhile, BJP president Amit Shah and Union information and broadcasting minister Smriti Irani on Friday filed their nominations for Rajya Sabha elections from Gujarat.

Currently, Amit Shah is an MLA from Gujarat’s Naranpura constituency.
Of the total 11 Rajya Sabha members from the state, the term of three – Irani and Dilipbhai Pandya (both BJP) and Ahmed Patel (Congress) – is ending on August 18.

The Congress has re-nominated Ahmed Patel, political secretary to party president Sonia Gandhi. The 67-year-old Congressman filed his nomination papers on Thursday.
