THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Police have invoked sections of rape and stalking on Kovalam’s Congress MLA M Vincent who was on Wednesday booked after a woman attempted suicide after being allegedly sexually harassed by him.
The decision to invoke Sections 376 and 354(d) of the IPC was taken after the 51-year-old woman gave statements in this regard to the police on Thursday. The woman had allegedly attempted suicide by consuming excess amounts of sleeping pills on Wednesday afternoon. The Balaramapuram police had registered an abetment of suicide and verbal abuse case after the woman’s husband complained that the MLA used to harass her over phone and even threatened her.
Since an MLA was involved in the case, the government appointed Kollam city police commissioner S Ajeetha Begum as the investigating officer in the case. She visited the private hospital at Neyyatinkara where the woman is under treatment and recorded her statement, on Thursday.
The police would consider taking the MLA’s statement only after the medical examination of the complainant. The procedure could not be completed as the complainant is still under treatment for poisoning.
