In Saharanpur 38 held

An edgy peace reigned over Saharanpur on Sunday following the arrest of 38 people for the violence in which three people were killed and scores injured.

The Uttar Pradesh police registered nine FIRs and the state government said it would charge the riot accused under the stringent National Security Act, which makes immediate bail very difficult to procure.

“All those who were active in Saturday’s riots will be booked under NSA,” said ADG (law and order) Mukul Goel. A person booked under NSA is not entitled to bail on any grounds for at least six months from the date of arrest. Goel added the government had received a first round report on the riots. He said it would go through the report before acting against officers if found derelict during the crisis in the next few days.

The police arrested 38 people for rioting and arson that began over a land dispute on Saturday. Saharanpur SP Rajesh Pandey said, “FIRs were filed in different police stations and a probe’s underway. More than 100 FIRs are likely to be registered in the coming week.

“We’re scrutinizing photographs and videos to track the culprits. Arrests were also made on the basis of this analysis,” said SP Pandey. Meanwhile, the number of those injured in the violence rose to 33. The police said all of them were stable.

Rapid Action Force personnel marching through Saharanpur to enforce the curfew imposed following communal clashes.

Curfew remained in force. “The situation is under control,” district magistrate Sandhya Tiwari told www.satyamevjayates.com . “The situation will be reviewed later in the evening to decide on relaxation,” she added.

More than 3,000 armed men, including two ITBP companies, four companies of CRPF, three companies of RAF, three SSB companies and 10 PAC companies, stood guard to enforce the clampdown.

“Paramilitary forces are positioned in sensitive areas and people instructed to stay indoors,” DIG, STF, Deepak Ratan, said. Police teams would assess damage to public property. “Till now, 22 burnt shops and 15 damaged two-wheelers have been surveyed. This isn’t the final figure and it would go up once the survey is completed,” said SP Pandey.

On plans to relax curfew on Monday, ahead of Eid, DM Sandhya Tiwari, said, “We’re encouraged by the improvement in situation and a decision on curfew relaxation will be taken at a joint meeting of all officials late in the evening.”

Authorities contemplated lifting curfew in six police circles of Saharanpur for short intervals after the government air-dashed additional director general, telecommunications, Dewendra Singh Chauhan, as special observer for oversight of riot-hit areas.
