Uninor may launch 4G

Uninor, which offers telecom services in just seven of the 23 circles in India, could push operators such as Airtel and Aircel into a 4G tariff war ahead of the much-awaited Reliance Jio roll out next year.

“We will soon start our testing for 4G services and offer it commercially where there is demand,” Morten Karlsen Sorby, CEO Uninor told satyamevjayates.com.

At present, 4G services are priced on par with 3G in the few circles where they are available. Uninor is in discussions with original equipment manufacturers for testing 4G speed and connectivity, and is likely to launch services this year, though a time frame has not been decided.

“We are discussing with our vendors for 4G testing and based on our roll out plans and their preference, a decision will be taken,” said Sorby, who took over as Uninor CEO this January.

At present, the company offers only voice services in prepaid format. It is confident of offering 4G-based Internet services in India based on its experience in other countries such as Sweden, where its parent company Telenor operates.

The company recently launched “Sabse Sasta Internet for All”, which has seen positive customer response. It has set a target to double revenues from Internet services and the percentage of subscribers.

With about 40 million subscribers in India, Uninor is confident that it would be able to replicate its, ‘sabse sasta’ success in 4G services. “We are no longer a voice only operator, our second phase of investment is to change Uninor from a voice-focused to a voice and internet for all focused operator,” said Sorby.
